Examining shoes and socks can show indications of FHL. The hyper-support under the pulp of the big toe can go as far as making a hole in the sock. The progress of the step on the outer edge of the foot is easy to observe in regularly-worn shoes. Patients often notice of their own accord that the outer edges of their heels wear out prematurely.

FLH is also manifested by the shift of the anterior tongue of the shoe on the external slope in connection with the exaggerated pronation at the end of the downforce phase. The widening of the shoe sometimes occurs early, especially on the outer side of the shoe and even more so if it is equipped with supports that raise the arch of the foot. Slippage of the foot inevitably occurs over time.
